About 2-3 years ago I made a leadership mistake. I thought NHC was doing pretty good financially and most of our people were following sound financial principles. I remember thinking, "I don't have to teach on this much anymore. We've got it down."
Last year I stood before God and NHC and repented of my stupidity. Now I teach at least one 4-week series a year on money and sprinkle it throughout other series whenever I can mention it.
Why? Because we don't have it down! And even those of us who have it down are subject to something that I see in my own life from time to time - greed-creep. I find myself thinking that I've licked greed...that I've finally turned my money completely over to God...but greed has a way of creeping back into my life.
Greed-creep is that subtle suggestion that I need more...I've got some nice stuff and I know that my relationship with God is the key to fulfillment in life, BUT, it sure would be nice to have that...or that...or this...
Let's not kid each other - we ALL struggle with greed-creep. I do. You do. Our whole culture does. So the question for me as a leader is what do I do? The answer is fairly simple. Teach things and put systems in place that will help people!
That's what Freakonomics is all about - helping people follow Jesus in the area of their finances by stopping greed-creep! This Sunday we're going to continue by slaying a Monster! This is going to be a Sunday that will be practical, helpful and fun. So invite your wall people (they need to be free financially too!) and let's pray for God to do something great at NHC!!
See ya' Sunday!
